Clinical Training in Infectious Diseases
The UCLA Medical Center encompasses a 711-bed tertiary care hospital and an adjacent ambulatory complex, and is located on the UCLA Westwood campus in proximity the entire biomedical and basic science university community. This complex serves as a major referral center for the southern California region, and has full complement of surgical and medical subspecialties, including one of the leading solid organ transplantation programs in the world.
All fellows complete the bulk of their clinical training during the first 12 months based at UCLA Medical Center, including training on inpatient consultation services and outpatient clinics. Core inpatient rotations include the general (26 weeks) and solid organ and bone marrow transplant ID services (6 weeks), which provide a broad clinical exposure. Ambulatory clinic training during this first year consists of general ID clinic at UCLA Medical Center (1/2 day per week) and HIV Clinics (4 weeks). During the first year, all fellows also rotate through the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory (2 weeks), Hospital Epidemiology program (2 weeks), and inpatient ID consult service at Harbor UCLA Medical Center (4 weeks).
During the second year of training, fellows will attend continuity HIV clinic (1/2 day per week) and have the option to continue in the general ID clinic (1/2 day per week). Fellows also can elect to rotate on the UCLA Medical Center Pediatric ID consultation service or inpatient ID service at the nearby Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital.
All ID fellows also attend and participate actively in weekly clinical lectures, ID Grand Rounds, and clinical case conference.
