Research Training in Infectious Diseases
Each fellow is strongly encouraged to select a mentor during the first year, and to develop a career direction to pursue during the research phase of fellowship after the first year. Starting the second year, fellows will be given protected time to focus on developing a research program under the guidance of faculty mentor(s). Clinical responsibility will be limited to a weekly half-day HIV outpatient clinic at either the nearby Clinical AIDS Research and Education (CARE) Center or Valley HIV clinic, to fulfill American Board of Internal Medicine and ACGME requirements. Mentors can be researchers from anywhere within the UCLA system (including the School of Public Health, basic science departments such as Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics, and any UCLA-affiliated medical facilities), although it is suggested that there be at least one co-mentor from the Division. Some potential research areas and mentors are listed below.
