Roger
Detels, M.D., M.S. Professor
of Epidemiology and Medicine
Dr. Detels is the director of the Los Angeles Center of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study which has been in existence since 1984. The total number of participants in the Los Angeles Center is 2,000 MSM and for the entire MACS over 6,000 men. Over 900 papers on various aspects of the natural history at the epidemiologic, clinical and molecular level have been published by the MACS. Professor Detels’ primary interest is in identifying factors associated with resistance to infection including genetic and molecular factors, and he and his colleagues were the first to document resistance to infection. Professor Detels is also interested in factors which are responsible for long term survival of men with less than 50 CD4+ cells. He and his colleagues are currently assessing the role of the innate immune system in long term survival with low levels of CD4+ cells. Professor Detels is also the Director of the UCLA/Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program, which has trained over 100 predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees from China, India, Southeast Asia, Angola and Mozambique. His research in these countries focuses on identifying factors associated with transmission of HIV and developing and evaluating intervention strategies to prevent further spread of the virus. Professor Detels has published over 300 papers of which approximately 100 have been on HIV/AIDS. Selected
